Jim Dine (USA 1935)

Sitting With Me 1996

The pop art artist Jim Dine, born in the USA in 1935, began painting robes (badjassen) and bathrobes in the 1960s. After seeing a photo of a bathrobe in a catalog, he saw it as a self portrait, an anonymous everyday form that still had a strong personal character. By painting the bathrobe again and again in different styles and colors, Dine was able to experiment with texture, expression, and abstraction. It became an iconic motif in his work, similar to how he used hearts and tools as recurring symbols. His work is included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Three intaglio prints from the series Sitting With Me 1996 are being auctioned.
